With 21 years of working in the public sector in both Parks and Recreation and Community Services, Hugo Montenegro earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Southern University in 1999 with an emphasis in Recreation Administration. In the near future, he is planning on completing his Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA) from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. He was introduced to this profession at an early age through his father who is a retired Parks and Recreation Director in California. Montenegro knew at an early age that he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and make an impact in the community.
After earning his degree, he accepted a position as Recreation Center Manager with the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority in Rome, Georgia. Montenegro then moved on to Cobb County Parks and Recreation Department in Marietta, Georgia and opened the brand new South Cobb Recreation Center. Eventually, he would settle in South Florida and gain more invaluable experience with the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department in Lake Worth, FL.
In 2009, he accepted a position with the Palm Beach County Community Services Department within the Senior Services Division as the Manager of the North County Senior Center located in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. In 2015, he was promoted to Recreation Programs Coordinator for the Senior Services Division and supervised six full-time staff and programs at all three Palm Beach County Senior Centers. In 2020, Montenegro was selected out of 50 applicants and offered the position of Recreation Center Manager with the Hardeeville Parks and Recreation Department. Montenegro chose the opportunity to join the Hardeeville Parks and Recreation Department because of the exciting opportunity to open a brand new recreation center and because of his passion for Parks and Recreation.
During his free time, he enjoys camping, paddle boarding, relaxing at the beach and volunteering. Most recently, he has been active in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by fundraising and raising awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Florida. He volunteered as the Logistics Chairperson for the Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in West Palm Beach.
He is thrilled and honored to make Hardeeville, SC his new home and looks forward to building relationships in the Hardeeville community.
