The Lowcountry Area Transportation Study (LATS) encourages citizens to get involved in a newly initiated SC 170 Corridor Access Management Study. The SC 170 corridor currently carries an average of 33,000 vehicles per day. This area has experienced significant growth which has led to increased congestion and safety concerns along the corridor. Because widening the road would be cost prohibitive at this time, this corridor is an excellent candidate to implement access management strategies to improve safety and traffic flow. By implementing access management strategies now, the corridor will be able to handle additional traffic volumes, provide safe access, limit signalization to key locations, and provide opportunities for landscaping and multimodal uses. The purpose of this study is to study the traffic and growth patterns and to make recommendations on where access management strategies could most benefit the corridor.
The study area begins at the intersection of SC 170 at Okatie Center South and includes 4.5 miles of SC 170 to the intersection of SC 462.
The Lowcountry Area Transportation Study (LATS) is leading the project and has contracted with a consulting firm, AECOM, to do the necessary studies. Other project partners include Beaufort County, Jasper County, Town of Hilton Head Island, Port Royal, Town of Bluffton, City of Beaufort, City of Hardeeville, and Lowcountry Council of Governments.
The study is just getting underway so preliminary engineering and traffic studies have started now so no final decisions have been made, but some of the access management strategies may include: intersection improvements to relieve congestion, geometric improvements to improve safety, bike/pedestrian accommodations, and signal timing.
The study began in Spring of 2019 and expected to conclude by the Fall of 2019. Residents are encouraged to get more information about the study and make comments on the wikimap at this location. https://wikimapping.com/Corridor170.html.
